Open-ended Digital Programme
As part of Origin’s commitment to continuous innovation, our teams have launched a new offering that can be adapted to a range of industries, packaging types and specific requirements. Designed to benefit clinical trials, to promote medication adherence and to provide a positive user experience, our OpenEnd Digital Programme is changing the way manufacturers develop their pharmaceutical and healthcare products.
Interactive smart packaging
Origin’s smart packaging is capable of communicating via Bluetooth, NFC and other internet connections, opening up a remote dialogue between all tiers of healthcare providers and pharmaceutical license holders. This embedded technology facilitates direct communication with the patient or user, allowing the monitoring of their health trends, reactions to medication, and other crucial factors in their health and wellbeing journey.
A voice from the marketplace
In the process, this technology also provides a means for the patient to communicate genuine feedback to the license holder. The key benefit of our interactive packaging is that it will break down the longstanding barriers between large pharmaceutical companies and their consumers.
For years the original manufacturer has been unable to gain in-depth and honest consumer feedback that could prove invaluable, whereas Origin’s OpenEnd Digital Programme essentially creates a conduit between the manufacturer and the marketplace that can be used for ongoing product development. This verbatim feedback brings tremendous value, as it gives first-hand insight into the usability of the packaging and the preferences of the consumer.
Two-way communication
Through our OpenEnd Digital Programme, smart packaging can also be used for two-way communication between multiple parties. For instance, the consumer could be given the option to share core information right across the supply chain rather than solely to the original manufacturer.
This offers the potential to create a wider conversation fuelled by constructive commentary direct from the end user. Depending on the specific application, the data being shared, and the way the data is used, this technology may or may not qualify under SaMD – we will work with your team to establish this.
Simplifying and enhancing clinical trials
When it comes to carrying out clinical trials, the OpenEnd Digital Programme has multiple applications. The smart packaging can connect the user in real-time with their health provider, care teams, hospitals and family members, enabling the effective and uninhibited sharing of crucial data in a secure and compliant manner.
Historically, clinical trials can often prove challenging by their very nature and particularly during a pandemic, as vulnerable people tend to avoid social interactions. Connected packaging removes the majority of steps that involve physical contact within a clinical trial programme, helping to enlarge the trial audience and gather data that’s more representative of a demographic group or the wider population.
Multi-level data gathering
The smart packaging system from Origin can be adjusted to suit the specific needs of any clinical trial. For instance, in its basic form it can simply record when and where the medication is taken, shedding light on the consumer’s usage habits.
On a more advanced level, the packaging can provide real-time metrics such as blood pressure, pulse rate, temperature, emotions and wellbeing levels by connecting with Google Fitbit and other wearable tech and health apps. This information uncovers trends relating to the prescribed medication, giving the manufacturer and laboratory teams a clear picture of how consumers engage with their pharmaceutical products.
We then have the option to approach the application through SaMD to enable two-way communication option that allows the patient to openly interact with the clinical trial team, providing a remote channel for data exchange direct from the consumer’s living environments.
A revolution in pharmaceutical packaging
Origin’s smart packaging has been developed following a range of connective studies, utilising common packaging forms that we have been manufacturing for decades, such as bottles, blister packs and cartons. Complete with anti-counterfeit features, seamlessly embedded technology, encrypted data, reusable electronics and child-resistant design, our smart packaging offers the opportunity to gather real-time market feedback in an easy, streamlined and unintrusive way.
Whether you choose to monitor the usage of your products as individual tablets or on a pallet level within our Supply Chain 3.0 model, the potential for collecting game-changing data is unparalleled and of significant value to your development teams.
Partnership for Product Trials
Origin has developed, and invested within the digital tech remit to improve and enhance the clinical trials space, with a strategic programme within general primary packaging. We have worked with partners to develop our technology which can be applied across a range of packaging types, which will allow you to progress your product trials with confidence.

Results
During 2020-2021 Origin undertook a range of beta and UEX testing, simulating the use of our concept connected packaging. A small batch of prototype products was developed with a small independent power source. The units were released to selected partners within the UK and Europe who were tasked with using the packaging at specific locations and circumstances, intended to reflect every-day use.
Adherence to the program was tracked with the data returned versus the users actual physical data record. UEX feedback also gave insights into the product design and functionality, enabling us to critique our product for the next version control.
Environments selected to provide test data included use across gender types and adult age groups from 18 to 70 years. Tests included domestic and commercial environments and included environments with poor wifi connectivity. Additionally, some units were activated during travel on public transport, including road, rail and air travel.
Key Learns
Origin worked to create both micro and macro electronics to support potential application of the technology within clients existing packaging with minimal requirement for change. One key area of focus in this regard was the safe and reliable inclusion of a power source and our work included printed ‘thin-film’ battery studies. In order to maximise the longevity of the power source, Origin developed a method by which the pack would remain dormant until the first dose was extracted.
